Autism and Occupation

Mission

The autism research cluster is a new initiative formed in response to the recent increase in number of individuals being diagnosed with autism and autism-spectrum disorders and the advances in basic research on the underlying neurological foundations and implications of autism. Scientists forming the core of this cluster have diverse backgrounds, from the arts to linguistics and from engineering to occupational therapy, that enhance their current innovative research in ways to better understand the lived experiences of persons with autism and to enhance opportunities for participation of such individuals. Preliminary research in this cluster has focused on areas such as: language socialization practices that promote realization and development of communicative abilities; meaning, organization of behavior and connection to others; construction of identity in social worlds; and technologies to help individuals with autism manage the everyday challenges they face.
