Vision & Mission Statement

Vision Statement

The vision of the USC Biomedical Imaging Science Initiative is to enable major breakthroughs in the study of human biology in health and disease through the multidisciplinary application of imaging techniques at all scales - from molecules to man.

The USC Biomedical Imaging Science Initiative will facilitate a major expansion of the boundaries that currently limit our knowledge of the human organism. This will be accomplished by the application of multimodal imaging techniques capable of elucidating the anatomical and functional characteristics of living organisms, leading to new paradigms for understanding disease, its development, its treatment and its prevention.

Mission Statement

The mission of the USC Biomedical Imaging Sciences Initiative is to achieve two specific and complementary goals: to establish USC as an international leader in the imaging field, and to enable biomedical scientists at USC and elsewhere to address fundamental research questions by expanding their use of imaging technologies. This will be accomplished through the following major themes:

  • To facilitate the collaboration of interdisciplinary research teams of clinical, biomedical and physical scientists and engineers focused on the development of biomedical imaging approaches to problems ranging from fundamental human biology, through the development, design and evaluation of pharmaceuticals and other therapeutic interventions, to their translation to clinical practice.
  • To assume a leadership role in the imaging arena for the development and application of new imaging modalities and analytical paradigms, through the collaboration of USC experts and the development of additional faculty expertise.
  • To enhance our imaging infrastructure to provide state-of-the-art facilities capable of cutting-edge techniques through the collaborative use of existing instrumentation and the acquisition of new instrumentation, and to make these facilities readily accessible to all USC investigators.
  • To provide a networked cadre of USC experts who can guide other investigators, both within and outside the university, in the application of new imaging techniques in their research and in the interpretation of data derived from these new applications.
  • To train the next generation of imaging scientists by providing specialized degree programs for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows which will include formal course work, special seminars and hands-on training with internationally-recognized imaging specialists.
