Graduate Assistant Request Forms

Request for Approval of:

Graduate Assistant Appointment over 50 percent or less than 25 percent

In general, graduate assistant appointments should not be less than 25 percent, and all units are urged to offer 50-percent appointments when possible, even if this reduces the overall number of students supported. If there is an academic necessity for an appointment of less than 25 percent, the hiring unit must offer at least 4 units of tuition and full payment of student health and dental insurance and the Health Service fee.

The combination of employment and assistantship duties should not exceed 50 percent of the graduate assistant's total effort, with the exception of summer term, when there is no restriction on the time commitment. Because of the potential risk to students' timely academic progress, the Graduate School does not typically approve over-50 percent Graduate Assistantships.

Graduate Assistant Appointment without Full-Time Status

Students enrolled in GRSC 800, GRSC 810, Thesis 594, or Dissertation 794 are considered full-time and do not need to submit this form.

University policy requires that each Graduate Assistant be enrolled each semester (excluding summer) in a minimum of six credit units (no auditing) at the 400 level and above, unless the student is enrolled in GRSC 800, GRSC 810, Thesis 594 or Dissertation 794, or has a valid academic reason for enrolling in fewer units.

Except under special circumstances, international students without full-time status are prohibited by immigration law from working as a Graduate Assistant.
