1. Opening
- Chair opens the meeting and welcomes all persons attending the meeting.
The agenda is confirmed as listed.
- In commemoration of Prof. Jose Cuena who passed away in July 99, Chair
recalls the excellent work of J. Cuena as the Spanish member of TC-12 and
as the Chair of WG12.5.
2. TC-12 ChairŽs report
- Chair reports about the meeting of the IFIP General Assembly held in
Budapest after the last TC-12 meeting in September 1998. The new WG
"Intelligent Information Management" and the proposed changes of the Aims
and Scope of TC-12 have been approved.
- Together with several other members of TC-12, Chair has been active
preparing the conference IIP2000 as part of WCC2000 in Beijing.
3. WG 12.5 "Knowledge-Oriented Development of Applications"
- The WG is represented by M. Musen (Vice Chair) and R. Studer (Secretary).
Due to the recent death of J. Cuena, who has been active as Chair of WG
12.5 up to his last weeks, a regular report cannot be presented. Chair
proposes that M. Musen should become the new Chair and R. Studer the new
Vice Chair of WG 12.5. This is carried unanimously by all present TC-12
members.
- Regarding future activities, it is proposed to incorporate the
Knowledge-Acquisition Workshop into WG 12.5. P. Navrat suggests to
establish a close link to the KBSE conferences (Knowledge-Based Software
Engineering).
4. WG 12.6 "Intelligent Information Management"
- Chair reports that unfortunately D. OŽLeary could not find the time to
get active as the chair of the new WG 12.6. TC-12 members agree unanimously
to relieve D. OŽLeary of his duties as the WG 12.6 Chair. Candidates for
the WG 12.6 leadership and for members will be solicited via email
following the meeting.
- It is suggested to establish a link to WG12.6 led by E. Neuhold.
5. IIP2000 within IFIP World Computer Congress 2000 (Beijing)
- Chair emphasizes that IIP2000 is a central activity of TC-12 and must
become a success. TC-12 members are concerned about the lack of visibility
of the IIP2000 sub-conference in the AI community. Chair reports that Z.
Shi will distribute CfPs at the IJCAI conference.
- M. Musen agrees to take over the part of J. Cuena as IIP2000 track chair.
The CfP will be changed accordingly.
- Z. Bubnicki will be included as track 3 PC member in an update of the CfP.
- Unfortunately IIP2000 will be in the same week as the ECAI conference.
Hence special measures must be taken to obtain satisfactory participation.
- In order to increase the competitiveness if IIP2000, attractive invited
talks will be solicited immediately (until the end of September) by the
track chairs, including an invited talk for the general conference.
Registration fees should be waved for invitees, and an additional
honorarium of $1000 should be offered. Chair will clarify conditions asap.
- Contributions to IIP2000 must be solicited by all PC members using
personal contacts etc. Chair will try to obtain the IT&KNOWS participants
list.
- In order to facilitate correct track assignments and for transparency, a
web site for all IIP2000 contributions will be established for the IIP2000
PC.
- The program of IIP2000 should be structured to fit into 2 consecutive
days. Tracks 1 and 2 should not run in parallel. The program should be
coordinated with closely related topics in other sub-conferences.
- Chair will clarify conditions for tutorials.
6. Further development of TC-12
- Chair urges all members of TC-12 to take notice of any special interests
of their country regarding the development of AI and possible support by
TC-12. However, additional TC-12 activities should be in accord with the
intended foci of TC-12:
(1) activities towards integrating AI and main Computer Science and
(2) activities towards bringing AI into praxis.
- J. Komorowski suggests "Computational Biology" as a candidate for a
further WG of TC-12. After some discussion about contents and naming it is
agreed that a "special event" on this topic should be included in the
IIP2000 program.
7. TC-12 scientific sponsorship of international conferences
See item 3. There are no further requests or suggestions.
8. Next meeting
The next TC-12 meeting will take place in connection with WCC2000 (and
IIP2000) in Beijing, August 21 - 25, 2000. The exact date will be announced
in spring 2000 as soon as the conference program is established.
9. Close
Chair closes the meeting at 13:00.
