USC College’s English department offers B.A. degree programs in American literature, English Literature, literature and language, and creative writing. Minor programs in English and American literature, literature and creative writing, and literature and exposition are also available. To develop as a scholar and writer, students can combine an English major with another area of literature, journalism or cinema-television critical studies.
Classes are usually limited to 30 students, and upper-division courses are often composed of 12-16 students. From Victorian prose and verse to an analysis of gender issues in modern literature, the courses challenge students. The English honors program requires advanced work in criticism and literature, and a senior thesis.
The department’s wide-ranging faculty include published poets, novelists, cultural critics, essayists and literary historians. They are experts in medieval and Renaissance, and 18th- and 19th-century literature, critical theory, film and popular culture, gender and queer studies, minority discourse, postcolonialism, modernism, rhetoric and romanticism. Seven USC College professors were named among the top 100 writers in Southern California.
Studying English can increase one’s opportunities in any career. English graduates often pursue advanced academic work, but often venture into a variety of fields including business, medicine, law, education and social work.
