Geography at USC College goes far beyond the boundaries of traditional cartography and the making of maps. Geographers are interested in understanding how humans and human societies utilize and transform their environments, and in turn, how conditions on the Earth's surface provide opportunities and pose challenges for humanity. This involves knowledge about the natural systems around us (e.g., oceans, rivers, landforms, biota, climate), the provision and stewardship of natural resources for human use and consumption, and the diverse set of historical, cultural, social, economic, and political structures that have evolved in consequences of people living with each other in distinct geographical locations. Central topics covered in departmental courses include the cultural, economic and environmental dimensions of communities and cities; comparative studies of urban regions; globalization, geopolitics, and development; place-based expressions of social difference based on race, gender, class, and sexuality; and the mapping and representation of surface features and resource management policies using geographic information science. In addition to generating new academic knowledge and insights, geographers also provide highly valued services to state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, and a range of corporations and institutions.

A B.A. in geography requires students to choose one of three tracks: urban environments, natural environments or geographic information science. Minors in coastal ocean and watershed science, geographic information science, Pacific Rim development and the Southern California region are also offered. An environmental studies degree with a geography emphasis is another option.

Small classes at the College mean greater interaction with faculty and strong research opportunities. Students are encouraged to complement their in-class education with field trips and practical experience. The city of Los Angeles serves as a limitless living laboratory complete with its own set of variables and challenges. Students can work with top researchers using powerful graphical information systems technology, or learn about new topics such as sustainability, urban theory and environmental justice. A growing field is geographic research in demographics, and urban and natural environments.
