German studies at USC College help develop language mastery, and investigate literature and culture in the German-speaking countries of Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and Switzerland.

Faculty convey both the general sweep of German contributions to history and modern life, and communicate a specific understanding of towering intellectual and literary figures such as Heidegger, Wittgenstein and Goethe. Over the years, many German scholars have settled in Los Angeles. As a result, the campus and city offer myriad opportunities to explore eras of German philosophy, music and art, and various ways to stay attuned to the culture and politics of 21st-century Germany.

A major in German can lead to a B.A. degree. A minor program with a focus on literature, language or business is also offered. Study abroad programs in Freiberg, Berlin and Vienna can enhance one’s overall understanding of the German language and culture.

Students are encouraged to use available technology in the USC College Language Center, to gather in small discussion groups, and to watch German film and television broadcasts for a more comprehensive and effective experience.
