In USC College’s kinesiology department, students are taught fundamental scientific and physiological principles that influence human performance via an interdisciplinary approach. Founded just prior to 1919, it is one of the oldest departments of its kind on the West Coast.

Students gain hands-on experience with clinical diagnostic methodologies such as electrocardiography, pulmonary function, manual muscle testing, electromyography, dynomometry and video-based motion analysis.

Through innovative lectures and presentation materials, faculty teach fundamental physiological and biomechanical concepts, and integrate the latest research findings from their laboratory and scientific literature. As a result, students learn current concepts long before they are printed in textbooks.

Using cutting-edge technology, students collect their own physiological data. They then use the data to illustrate cause-effect relationships, and test hypotheses regarding human behavior under normal, pathological and stressful conditions. Topics range from the assessment of forces experienced by the ankle during jumping activities to the control of blood glucose levels during exercise.

Whether a student pursues a future in science, health, the arts or business, the kinesiology degree program provides an opportunity to assimilate current scientific concepts, develop critical thinking skills, and refine communication and technological skills that are important for today’s job market. Students can follow specialized tracks in health and fitness, pre-medicine or pre-physical therapy.
