Professors in USC College?s Spanish and Portuguese department use literature, folklore, cinema, art, music and architecture in small, discussion-driven classes to explore a number of critical contemporary issues. Students are challenged to examine matters such as the growing importance of popular culture in Iberia, Latin America and the Latino United States; the role of race, class and gender within Spanish and Latin American society; and the impact of diasporas and migrations on today?s cultural landscape.

The department offers a B.A. major in Spanish emphasizing the language, linguistics, literature and culture of Spain and Latin America. A Spanish minor is the second-most popular minor at USC. A variety of study-abroad options are available in Spain and Iberian-American countries, and include local full-time support from USC in Madrid.

The College offers an outstanding language center, using technology to create effective instruction. Students can watch Spanish media, gather in small groups and make rapid progress with an online Spanish workbook.

Home to more than a million native Spanish speakers, Los Angeles is the largest Spanish-speaking community in the nation and a gateway to Latin America. In addition, popular authors and lecturers from Latin American countries often visit the city and campus, and can extend students? interest with a personal connection.
