Thank you for your interest in participating in this research study, which aims to determine what happens in the brain during different emotions induced by music.

The requirements for this study are:

  • aged 18 or over
  • living in Southern California
  • normal or corrected normal hearing
  • no history of psychiatric or neurological disorders
  • no other medical conditions which would preclude you from participating in an fMRI experiment, such as: pregnancy, claustrophobia, or the presence of any non-removable metal within your body (e.g. braces, pacemaker, etc.)

The study has two parts. In the first part, participants will complete an online questionnaire which will gather more information about their backgrounds, emotional experiences with music, and religious beliefs and practices. This will take approximately 30 minutes.

After completing the questionnaire, participants will be emailed and informed whether they are eligible for the second part of the study. In this second part, participants will come to USC and listen to music while situated in a non-invasive, non-harmful, Magnetic Resonance Imaging scanner. Afterwards, they will be interviewed about the emotions they had. This part of the study will last approximately 2 and a half hours. Participants in this second part of the study will be compensated for their time ($20/hour).

Your participation is voluntary.

Please pass this on to any friends and family members who might be interested.

Thank you very much.
