IERC hosted its inaugural conference February 23-24, 2007. The conference joined scholars from several disciplines together to explore the effects of religion, cultures and legal systems on the economic trajectories of civilizations. The civilizations studied comparatively include those of East Asia, the Middle East, Europe and sub-Saharan Africa. Contexts emphasized include commercial organizations, public finance, state formation, property rights and industrial organizations.
