Course Description and Objectives:
This course is designed primarily for advanced students of Japanese who have academic interests in a Japan-related area and intend to use Japanese resources in their research.
The class activities, assignments and projects for each part are designed to enable the students to find and analyze appropriate resources and materials to meet their research needs while at the same time enhancing their skills in all the four areas, reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Recommended Preparation: Advanced Readings in Japanese II (EALC 424) or equivalent

Course Components
1. Class contribution (performance and discussion participation in class)
Students are required to do preparation before coming to class and attend all class meetings. In class, they are required to actively participate in the discussion. At each class, a student can earn up to 10 5 points depending on his/her performance on the the :
- degree of preparation,
- amount of utteranceactive class participation,
- cohesiveness of opinion
- quality of questions and opinion, and the
- variety/ appropriateness of linguistic expressions.
2. Homework assignments:
Homework is assigned at every session including the basic grammar/expression exercises, short essays and the worksheets on the assigned reading materials.
3. Kanji/vocab. Quizzes
There is a Kanji/Vocab. Quiz every MondayTuesday. The preparation for the quizzes will be discussed in the preceeding sessions.

4. Presentation (Leading the class discussion)
Students are required to lead the class discussion twiceonce during semester for one fiftyforty minutes each. hour.
The leader should submit the topic to the instructor on in the fourth week. They should reconsider the topic topic and resubmit the new topic if suggested so by upon the instructor then resubmit the new topic.'s suggestions.
The The leader should have an individual conference with the instructor and submit the topic three weeks prioron September 5th, and the presentation plan on the day of individual conference with the instructortwo weeks prior to the class to lead. The plan should include (a) assignment, (b) vocabulary list, (c) summary of the topic, (d) materials to be used. schedule of class time, (e) description on what s/he wants to gain from the discussion on that specific topic.
The leader should lead the class for one hour.
After the class, the leader should submit the summary of the class discussion.
5. Paper Presentation
Students are required to give the presentation on their term paper during the last week of the semester. The last three class meetings of the semester are used for students’ presentation on their term paper. Students are graded for the quality of both contents and delivery.
6. Final Term paper
Students have to submit aone 5-page term paper on the scheduled date of the final exam. The style of the paper should conform to the one whichone that is usually used in Japanese academic articles. The paper should be typed using Japanese word processor and include the a bibliography. The length of the paper is 107 pages or longer including the bibliography (Mincho, 12 point, double space.)
7. Individual Consultation and Discussion in the Instructor’s Office
Aside from the class meetings, students are required to have a minimum of four individual consultation sessions with the instructor, one to be on leading the class discussion, two to be on the term paper, and one to be on the presentation. The number of the total consultation sessions for each student varies
Accommodation for Students with Disabilities:
