Sharon Shi (EALC Ph.D graduate student) will present her paper at the University of Colorado, Boulder's Colorado University East Asian Graduate Association (CUEAGA) conference held on April 11th and 12th. Her paper, entitled When "Child Bearer" Meets "Free Labor": A Study of Neo-Confucianism, China's Imaginary Capitalism and Overseas Chinese Women after the 1990s, is essentially built upon a feminist perspective. This paper adopts a theoretical framework of "patriarchic social norms in capitalism" and examines the situation of Chinese women with higher education in North America from early 1990s up till present. She presents the history of Chinese Diaspora after the 1990s from an unconventional source - that of personal narratives and analyze various socio-historical and cultural causes of overseas Chinese women's dilemma. The question about the place for personal/private narratives in history on the part of scholars is also addressed in this paper.
