East Asian Languages and Cultures

Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALC) currently offers a Ph.D. degree. Students are no longer admitted into the M.A. Program. Prospective students wishing to apply to the M.A. Program should apply to the Ph.D. Program instead. Only students applying to the Ph.D. Program will be considered for funding.

Students enrolling in our B.A. program typically concentrate on Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language and culture, while also taking broader survey and thematic courses on East Asia as a cultural unit. You may elect to complete up to one year of your course work in East Asia through various study-abroad programs.

The Ph.D. program in EALC aims to foster original approaches that balance systematic training in East Asian languages, literatures, and cultures while emphasizing interdisciplinary and intra-regional research.Students entering the program generally acquire in-depth training in one major national tradition and research field, and are encouraged to take advantage of our programmatic strengths in visual and material culture, literature, film, religion, historical studies, and linguistics.

Located in Los Angeles, the University of Southern California offers unparalleled access to numerous institutional, cultural, and intellectual resources for the study of East Asia. Within the university, the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures enjoys support from programs and schools such as the East Asian Studies Center, the Korean Studies Institute, the USC School of Cinema Arts, the Center for Japanese Religions and Culture, the Center for Feminist Research, the Center for Law, History, and Culture, and the Visual Studies Graduate Certificate Program. We also maintain close ties with other research universities in Southern California.
