The Ph.D. Program in East Asian Languages and Cultures
The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at USC is pleased to announce its newly designed Ph.D. program, now accepting graduate applications for Fall 2007.
Our doctoral program fosters original approaches to East Asian studies. With an emphasis on interdisciplinary and innovative research, the program provides students with systematic training in East Asian languages, literatures, and cultures, with special strengths in visual culture and gender studies.
The faculty is committed to intra-regional and interdisciplinary studies of East Asia, which includes critical interaction among the cultures of China, Japan, and Korea, and integration of modern and pre-modern studies. We engage the arts, languages, literatures, histories, media, religions, visual and material cultures of East Asia.
Doctoral students in East Asian Languages and Cultures also have the opportunity to participate in the activities of USC's new Literatures, Languages, and Cultures Consortium: for example, annual theme seminars led by top faculty from LLCC departments (Comparative Literature, East Asian Languages and Cultures, French and Italian, German, Slavic Languages and Literatures, Spanish and Portuguese), innovative conferences and lecture series, and multidisciplinary professional development courses.
Other major resources include the East Asian Studies Center, the Korean Studies Institute, Project for Pre-modern Japan Studies, Kambun Workshop, School of Cinematic Arts, Gender Studies Program, Huntington-USC Early Modern Studies Institute, Center for Law, History, and Culture, and Visual
Studies Graduate Certificate Program.
Located in Los Angeles, a Pacific Rim metropolis with the largest Asian population in the US, USC East Asian Languages and Cultures also offers unparalleled access to numerous institutional, cultural, and intellectual resources for the study of East Asia.
All doctoral students are provided with a competitive funding package in the form of fellowships, research/teaching assistantships, or a combination of these. Students also receive full tuition and health insurance benefits.
