Description of Research

Summary Statement of Research Interests

Professor Bender's stories are a breath of fresh air. Playful, inventive, and full of surprises, her modern fairy tale, The Girl in the Flammable Skirt, earned a New York Times Notable Book award. The San Francisco Chronicle said of her work: "Once in awhile, a writer comes along who makes you grateful for the very existence of language." Her work includes creative writing, fiction writing and the study of contemporary literature.
