Five Films by Nicolas Philibert
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs presents a 5-film cycle illustrating the talent of this contemporary film-maker. Nicolas Philibert offers us an unusual and slightly off-kilter viewpoint about prestigious places such as the Louvre Museum, and the Great Gallery of Evolution. He broaches in a subtle and relevant way the parallel worlds of deafness, madness and school. He manages to reconcile a documentary approach and fictional mainsprings for the greater pleasure of his audience.
1. Etre et avoir – To Be and to Have, 2002, 104’ - French version
Here, there and everywhere in France there are still « one room schools » where all the children in one and the same village are taught by the same schoolmaster or mistress, from the very youngest children to pupils in the « cours moyen 2eme année » (10-11 years). Between introversion and an open-minded attitute to the world, eclectic little bands share their everyday life, for better or for worse. This film was shot in such a school, somewhere in the depths of the Auvergne.
2. La ville Louvre – Louvre City, 1990, 85’ - French version
What does the Louvre look like without the public ? For the first time a great museum allows a film crew into its wings : people are hanging paintings, reorganizing rooms, and moving works around the museum. Little by little, characters appear and weave together the threads of a narrative…From studios, to stacks, to reserves containing thousands of pictures, this is the discovery of a city within a city.
3. Le pays des sourds – In the Land of the Deaf, 1992, 75’ - French version
What is the world like for the thousands of people who live in silence ? Jean-Claude, Abou, Claire, Philo and all the rest, who have been totally deaf since the early months of their lives, dream, think and communicate through signs. We set off to discover with them a distant land where seeing and touching are of such crucial importance. This films tells their story and gives us a glimpse of the world through their eyes.
4. La moindre des choses – Every Little Thing, 1996, 105’ - French version
During the summer of 1995, faithful to what has now become a tradition, residents and staff at the la Borde psychiatric clinic get together to put on the play which they will perform on the fifteenth of August. During rehearsals, the film retraces the ups and downs of this adventure. In addition to the theatre, it describes everyday life at La Borde: the passtimes, trivial events, loneliness and tiresomeness. The film also reveals moments of meritment, laughter, and wit peculiar to certain residents, and the close attention that people pay to one another…
