Biographical Sketch
Peter C. Mancall is Professor of History and Anthropology and Associate Vice Provost for Research Advancement at USC, and the Director of the USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute. He is the author of four books including Hakluyt's Promise: An Elizabethan's Obsession for an English America (Yale, 2007) and Deadly Medicine: Indians and Alcohol in Early America (Cornell, 1995). His next book, Fatal Journey: The Final Expedition of Henry Hudson: A Tale of Mutiny and Murder in the Arctic is scheduled for publication by Basic Books in May 2009. He is also writing American Origins, which will be volume one of the Oxford History of the United States. He is an elected member of the American Antiquarian Society.

Summary Statement of Research Interests
Peter C. Mancall is an historian of early America, the early modern Atlantic world, and early Native American Indian history (c. 1492-1840). He is the author of Valley of Opportunity: Economic Culture along the Upper Susquehanna (Cornell,1991), Deadly Medicine: Indians and Alcohol in Early America (Cornell, 1995), At the Edge of Empire: The Backcountry in British North America (with Eric Hinderaker, Johns Hopkins, 2003), Hakluyt's Promise: An Elizabethan's Obsession for an English America (Yale, 2007),and Fatal Journey: The Final Expedition of Henry Hudson--A Tale of Mutiny and Murder in the Arctic (forthcoming from Basic Books in 2009) . His edited books include Envisioning America (Bedford/St. Martin's,1995), Land of Rivers (Cornell, 1996), Three Worlds Meet (volume one of the multiple-prize winning Encyclopedia of the United States), and Travel Narratives from the Age of Exploration (Oxford, 2006). Mancall directs the USC-Huntington Library Early Modern Studies Institute, one of two collaborations between the two institutions.
