| Kristina Buhrman grew up in upstate New York and received her B.A. in linguistics and cognitive studies from Cornell University. Her current research focuses primarily on the religious and environmental history of pre-1600 Japan. Her dissertation, currently titled "Warding Off Disaster: Rites of Crisis Intervention in Japan," examines how "disaster" was defined by the Japanese court during the Heian and Kamakura periods (794-1333), and what actions were taken by the court in order to resolve or ameliorate such crises; particularly the commissioning and performance of rituals by religious specialists. |
