MAJOR FIELD: Pre-modern Japan

ADVISER: Joan Piggott

STATUS: Pre-quals

I have come to USC having recently completed my undergraduate degree in Japanese studies at Oxford University in England. My studies in my final year there focused on the Heian (794-1180) and Kamakura (1190- 1333) periods in Japan, and on the evolving relations between the sovereign's court in the capital and various warrior groups in the provinces. My undergraduate dissertation focused on these issues in relation to the Gempei War (1180-85), which, for the first time, allowed provincial warriors a degree of political power. I intend to continue this research at USC, hopefully focusing on this period of warfare and the years leading up to it.
