MAJOR FIELD: 19th-century American West

ADVISER: William Deverell

STATUS: ABD

Nicholas Hall's dissertation is exploring the ways that the American West's booster campaigns, anti-Asian sentiment, and eugenics movement were linked directly with the human “ordering” of the natural environment (land reclamation, irrigation, intensive agriculture) during the Gilded Age and Progressive Era (ca. 1875-1925).
