MAJOR FIELD: Eighteenth-century America

ADVISER: Carole Shammas

STATUS: ABD

Stephanie is currently researching and writing her dissertation with the working title, "Christianity, the Enlightenment, and Early American Education: Primers, Pedagogy, and Schools, 1700–1810." By examining attitudes and approaches to basic reading education, her dissertation focuses on how early Americans balanced their secular and religious identities and how that balance was influenced by the Enlightenment and their denominational experiences of events. Sections in the dissertation cover contemporary philosophy of education, changes in the doctrinal content of beginning reading textbooks (especially those printed in Pennsylvania), and how the people of Berks County, Pennsylvania acted on their desires for education and how often they complied with denominational dictates regarding education.
