CAREERS

Psychology is a very broad field of study which attracts students with a wide variety of interests. The scope of psychology has become too great to be completely encompassed within a single undergraduate program of study. The field is not one of rigidly set specialties, but of shifting and recombining interests. Much of modern academic growth is taking place within interdisciplinary, problem-oriented contexts. The College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, therefore, offers several undergraduate programs of study that relate directly to psychology. These majors provide the opportunity for students who have interdisciplinary interests to complete a program that is appropriate to their academic and personal goals. The Psychology department also offers numerous opportunities for students to engage n academic research with faculty. Several laboratories are available in the building, and many students enroll in Directed Research so they may receive credit for their assistance with current faculty research projects.

An undergraduate major in Psychology can lead to numerous careers directly related to the major. An excellent booklet entitled Psychology/Careers for the Twenty-First Century is published by the American Psychological Association (APA) and describes many career opportunities available in the field of psychology. It covers what graduate study is necessary and the various types of work that psychologists do. To obtain a copy call the APA order department at (800) 374-2721 ext. 5510. You may also order a copy through the APA's Web site. If you visit this site, you will have access to an ocean of information about academic and professional psychology.

Also informative is the Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Click here for the bureau's information about psychologists.
