PROJECT PURPOSE:To train entry-level occupational therapists to work in schools with children with high-incidence disabilities. Twelve elective units will be specifically designed to provide best practice school-based training.
TRAINING FEATURES:
- Coursework on laws & regulations, cultural competence, advanced treatment & evaluation techniques, working in pre-school through high-school; services for children with high-incidence disabilities to include learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, mental health disorders, fine motor deficits, sensory processing deficits in schools.
- Individualized learning contract for each trainee
- Clinical reasoning workshops and mentoring by grant faculty during field experiences and school-based fieldwork.
- Practice applying an evidence-based approach to school practice.
- Field experiences/fieldwork at best practice settings
PROJECT TRAINEES: 17 entry-level USC Occupational Therapy Masters students enrolled in the MAI professional program or the second year of the MAII program will be selected each year. Additional students may be selected as alternates.
APPLICATION PRE-REQUISITES: Admission to USC Graduate School and the Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, submission of trainee grant application, acquire positive faculty evaluations, and complete a personal interview. MA II students must successfully complete all coursework in the first year of the professional program and one Level II fieldwork. MAI students must demonstrate successful completion of equivalent coursework to the first year of the professional program.
GRAND AWARD:A $10,000 (approximately) stipend will be awarded to each trainee after verification of successful completion of the pre-requisites.
PAYBACK CLAUSE: You must commit to find employment as an Occupational Therapist serving children in U.S. schools for two years (cumulative) during the first four years after graduation. Extensions are available under some circumstances.
