It has always seemed to me that as occupational therapists, we are privileged to share in the life changing events of our clients. When they share their hopes and aspirations, we become their partners, helping make dreams a reality. Being on hand to witness client successes is like being there for family members who reach milestones (i.e. children taking off on two-wheeled bicycles or learning to whistle). As a therapist, although you see the bumps, falls and frustrations, each day is fulfilling as you adventure after keys that will open doors for clients. For example, you may adapt a telephone so a young girl can call her best friend or help someone learn to prepare a meal with the use of only one hand. Or, you might guide a troubled teenager toward an activity where he can experience a sense of achievement, a precursor to further pursuits that can move him in an optimistic and productive direction affecting the course of his life. In addition to the clients I've had and my relationships with them, I also cherish my colleagues and the teams we build to make things happen for our clients. As a former director of a large occupational therapy department, working with department leaders to develop a stronger occupation-based treatment approach remains a highlight.
Now, in my position as Director of Admissions for USC's Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, I am here for prospective students, acquainting them with the profession and USC's program through individual conversations and local and national group information sessions.
