Intubation and IV Workshop (January 2007)
On January 18, the LAC+USC Department of Anesthesiology
welcomed over 45 first and second year USC medical students
into the 14th floor conference room for our first workshop.
Dr. Raj Patel and resident anesthesiologists Liz Bales, Lisa
Wu, and Barbara Gasior led the bustling group of medical students
in teaching them how to intubate mannequins with varying degrees
of airway patency. Andrew Baek and Stanley Koh led the other
half of the room in learning techniques in IV placement, a
valuable skill many students do not have the opportunity to
master while in medical school. Expecting to learn about IV
lines, many students were surprised to learn upon arrival
that they would be practicing on each other. Lidocaine and
22-gauge needles helped to ease the discomfort caused by nervousness
and inexperienced hands. Overall, students found the hands-on
workshop a fun and educational experience to conclude an otherwise
long day of class.
