Simulator Training

The Patient Simulation Center at the University of Southern California includes a state-of-the-art computer controlled mannequin which provides residents with training experiences that would otherwise not be possible outside of experiencing the actual medical situations in a clinical environment. In addition to anesthesiology residents, the simulator offers teaching opportunities to residents in other departments, medical students, CRNAs, private practice physicians and laymen.

The METI HPS is a full scale, fully interactive, life-like simulator. Clinical features and monitored parameters are many, and include items such as palpable pulses, self-regulating control of breathing, heart and breath sounds, electrocardiograms, pulmonary artery pressure, and thermodilution cardiac output. Physiological and pharmacological models direct simulated patient responses (both normal and pathophysiological) to drugs, mechanical ventilation, and other medical therapies.

The Simulation Center provides clinicians with the resources necessary to practice the most basic skills like starting IV's, to more advanced skills such as intubation, use of cardiovascular medications, use of a defibrillator, or "high pressure" critical event management scenarios.
