Ph.D. Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
The program consists of both course work and research
and is intended to provide students with a broad conceptual
background as well as focused research training. The
flexibility of the program is designed to meet the interests
of individual students and to prepare them for specialization
in any of the major subdivisions of biochemistry.
The objective of the program is to prepare students
for careers as:
- Independent investigators and research leaders in
industry, government and academia; and
- Instructors in biochemistry, molecular biology
and related fields at the university level.
M.S. Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
The primary objectives of this program are to provide
the necessary theoretical preparation for biochemical
careers and to expose students to biochemistry and molecular
biology related research activities culminating with
the Master of Science degree.
The courses taken by Master students are identical
to the classes required for the doctoral degree. At
the completion of the M.S. degree, students can apply
to transfer into the Ph.D. program. The program is open
to students who want to obtain more extensive research
experience, update their theoretical preparation, or
who want to test their disposition toward academic training
without committing to a five-year agenda leading to
the Ph.D. degree.
Goals of the program are to train students in preparation
for
- Further doctoral study;
- Advanced biochemical research positions in industry
and academia; and
- Teaching positions at the community college level.
Ph.D. in Molecular Epidemiology
M.S. Molecular Epidemiology
The Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science programs
in Molecular Epidemiology are joint programs of the
Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and
the Department of Preventive Medicine.

Medicine graduate programs site. »
M.D./Ph.D. Degree
The Department participates in the joint M.D./Ph.D.
degree program administered by the USC Graduate School
and Keck School of Medicine. This program integrates
the medical school curriculum with graduate curricula
in the basic sciences, to provide a unified course of
study leading to both the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. The
program is especially designed to prepare highly qualified
students for careers in academic medicine.
