Founded in 1878, Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center is the primary
teaching facility of the
Keck School of Medicine, which has been affiliated with the
Medical Center since
1885.
It ranks among the largest acute care hospitals in America.
The Medical Center was first established as a 100-bed hospital with 47 patients. Since that time, it has undergone considerable growth in striving to keep pace with the community's health care needs and to achieve its purpose of rendering the highest quality care. The population of Los Angeles County has grown from 33,381 in 1878 to about 10 million in 2000. The Medical Center's staff has grown from a total of six to around 8,000 and the annual budget has grown from $4,000 to over $700 million. About 1,600 physicians in the community serve on the voluntary attending staff.
