Welcome to the Department of Emergency Medicine of
the Keck School of Medicine. The department is located
at the Los Angeles County+University of Southern California
(LAC+USC) Medical Center. This historic hospital, formerly
known as County General Hospital, is home to one of
the United States’ oldest and largest residency
training programs for Emergency Physicians, dating
back to 1971 when three residents began training. It
expanded over the years and is now a PG II-IV program
training 54 residents (18 residents per year). The
bulk of training takes place within the Department
of Emergency Medicine, although residents also rotate
on other clinical services.
The department has responsibility for the initial triage,
evaluation, management, and disposition of approximately
400-500 patients daily who present with the complete
spectrum of adult medical and surgical problems as well
as pediatric trauma. It also provides emergency, inpatient
and outpatient services for the most acute mentally-ill
men, women and children in Los Angeles County. Furthermore,
the Department of Emergency Medicine at LAC+USC recognizes
an emerging global health care community and is dedicated
to improving emergency medical care throughout the world.
The physicians and nurses continue to collaborate with
many large foreign academic centers, medical schools,
and international organizations, applying their knowledge
and service worldwide.
