GUIDE IN CHILE

The Republic of Chile, with a population of over 14 million people, sits narrowly along the western edge of South America, nestled between the majestic Andes Mountains and the shimmering Pacific Ocean. Although political issues in the past has dominated the world media, health care in Chile has continually grown and matured. After emergency medical services were evaluated in the early 1990's, the University of Chile and the University of Southern California entered into an agreement to help develop the specialty of emergency medicine. Located in the capitol city of Santiago, it is a four year residency program, with up to 6 residents per year.

CHILE ABSTRACT

All residents in the Chile program rotate through the base station responsible for all ambulance traffic in Santiago
In addition to lectures and learning modules based on the current curriculum of emergency medicine at LAC+USC, clinical shifts are done at the large city public hospital (Posta Central) and the University of Chile hospital. Residents are also intimately involved with the pre-hospital care of Santiago. The success of this residency is reflected in the recent growth of the specialty in Chile.

In addition to the newly organized Chilean Society of Emergency Medicine, the University of Santiago has recently developed a residency program. The Catholic University has also continued to improve its emergency department through a dedicated approach to patient care.
