The academic environment within the DEM encourages critical
thought and research activity by the residents and scholarly
activity is an essential element of the residency program.
While many residents publish peer review articles, a wide
variety of scholarly activities have been pursued by past
graduates. These include but are not limited to mini-fellowships,
international medicine, and curriculum revisement and development
for the department and medical school.
The volume and spectrum of clinical research material
available to EM residents at LAC+USC Medical Center is second
to no other program and residents may become actively
involved in research at any level of their training. Scholarly
activity and or publishable research are requirements for
completion of the residency. The residents have augmented
the Emergency Medicine research output dramatically over the
last decade. More resources for research are available including,
research associates, statistics and computer support. In the
last few years, many of our residents have had their senior
papers published, and we have had graduates generate as many
as 5 publications while in training.
