Call Schedule

PGY 1:
First-year residents are generally on-call every 4-5 nights throughout the year except during their obstetric/gynecology months when they will be a part of the separate obstetric call pool. Residents are exposed to a breadth of clinical experiences during call as they participate in the care of patients on the Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pediatric services. A senior resident is always in-house and works closely with the first-year residents throughout the call.

PGY II:
Second-year residents take part in the night float system that was implemented in July 2005 in order to provide enhanced continuity of patient care. Each PGY-II will spend two 2-week blocks during the year as the night float resident, for a total of four weeks, plus 1-2 additional calls per month when not on night float. Residents in this position are afforded the opportunity to further develop their clinical decision making and teaching skills as they supervise the care of patients on the Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pediatric services.
In addition, second and third-year residents are responsible for maintaining continuity with their maternity patients and come into the hospital to manage the labor and delivery process, under the guidance of Family Medicine faculty.

PGY III:
Third-year residents also participate in the night float system, covering two 2-week blocks during the year for a total of four weeks. In addition, each PGY-III provides weekend round coverage on a rotating basis for patients on the Family Medicine inpatient service, working in conjunction with a faculty physician. Third-year residents are also responsible for off-hour "home-call" coverage for patients of the Family Health Center and nursing homes. This duty is assigned on rotating basis throughout the year.
Each senior resident has backup call coverage available throughout the year.
