Family Medicine Clerkship

Preceptorships

The preceptorship experience will take place in an ambulatory-based clinical setting of an American Board Certified Family Physician or in a family practice residency program.

Students may request specific private offices from listings maintained in the Department of Family Medicine Clerkship Office in KAM B-33 or through MyMedWeb. Requests must be received no later than four weeks prior to the start of the clerkship or students will be assigned to sites by the Department of Family Medicine. Early requests for clinical assignments are recommended.

Preceptorship sites outside of the Los Angeles area may be acceptable and are encouraged for special educational purposes such as a unique community experience in a full service rural practice or in the Indian Health Service. For an “out-of-town” site to qualify for the Family Medicine clerkship requirement, the following are necessary:

  • A student must submit a written request to the Department of Family Medicine no later than four weeks prior to the start of the clerkship rotation. (Request forms are available in the Department of Family Medicine office). The department must have on file a faculty application form for the proposed preceptor, which reflects Family Practice specialty status (i.e.; certification of the American Board of Family Practice is required of all preceptors.) It is also a requirement that the site will provide the student with experiences that include the breadth of Family Medicine.

Special arrangements can be made for Indian Health Service sites in Arizona, Alaska or Oklahoma, but these sites are popular and scheduling must occur well in advance (often a year or more). Contact the Department of Family Medicine Clerkship Office for further information.
