Medical Spanish Program

Faculty

The course Director in Mexico is Dr. Oscar Martinez, Professor of Medicine in the college of medicine at Xochicalco University in Ensenada. A seventeen-year resident of Ensenada who originally came from Oaxaca, Dr. Martinez is a gifted teacher and musician. As an active member of the community in Ensenada, it is his contacts that have led to the selection of families where the students live. All families are hand-picked and most have had students in previous years. The family also serves as co-faculty for the course and they are encouraged to teach about their culture as well as being friends to the students.

Other faculty include: Dr. J. Dennis Mull, formerly of the University of California, Irvine and presently professor at USC -- one of the original consultants to the course, Dr. Mitzy Rojas, and Dr. Yolanda Diaz, from Xochicalco University. A total of 3 Mexican physicians teach full time in the summer course assuring that the emphasis remains on communicating with patients.
