USC Family Practice Residency Program at Keck School of Medicine

Our Faculty
The faculty of USC Family Medicine are experts in the field. Here is information about our core residency faculty.

Ignacio deArtola, MD
Advisor, Vice Chair for Clinical Services, University Hospital Rotation Coordinator & Preceptor
Dr. de Artola, attended the California College of Medicine at U.C. Irvine. He completed a residency in Family Medicine at Glendale Adventist Medical Center in Glendale California. Dr. de Artola was part of an HMO group practice in the San Fernando region of Los Angeles for 13 years. In his last eight years there he served as the Medical Director, which together with his tenure as Chief of Staff at the Medical Center of North Hollywood he gained, substantial experience in health care administration. He joined the Department of Family Medicine at USC in 1999 as Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs. He is currently Assistant Professor of Clinical Family Medicine and enjoys teaching residents, medical and physician assistant students. Dr. de Artola's professional interests include health care for the underserved, diabetes and health care administration. Personally, Dr de Artola enjoys sports, both active and passive (especially USC football), gardening and doing home improvement projects.

Chris Feifer, PhD
Associate Residency Director Research, Community Medicine, Electives, Evaluation, & GMEC Coordinator

Dr. Feifer received her doctorate in Public Health from UCLA and completed a 3 year PEW Health Policy Research Fellowship at the Rand Corporation. She is currently an Assistant Professor at USC's Keck School of Medicine and her research work has been focused on innovation in primary care practices for chronic disease prevention and management. She also works with community based agencies on program development and evaluation. 

Dr. Feifer has worked for 13 years on the faculty of family medicine residency programs. She plays a leading role in residency administration and has developed residency grants totaling almost $2 million. She provides expertise in evaluation, curriculum development and program improvement.

 
Linda Garcia-Shelton, PhD, MHSA
Behavioral Medicine Coordinator
Dr. Garcia-Shelton has been Director of Behavioral Medicine at the University of Southern California Department of Family Medicine since July 2005. Before that she was Vice President for Academic Affairs at the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology in Palo Alto. Prior that, she was on the Family Medicine faculty  of the University of Illinois at Chicago for 6 years, the Unviersity of Texas Medical Branch for 3 years, and Michigan State University for 16 years. At USC/FM, Dr. Garcia-Shelton has developed an Internship and a Practicum in Primary Care Psychology.  The 5 advanced doctoral psychology trainees now working with us at USC/FM teach and provide direct patient care in our Behavioral Medicine Service at our two outpatient residency clinics, and the Student Health Center at the Health Science Campus. Her research interests center on the contributions of psychology to improving patient care in primary care settings, and on the re-engineering of primary care practice to better meet the needs of the entire population.
 

Ricardo Hahn , MD
Department Chairman and Preceptor
Dr. Hahn received his MD degree from the University of Washington, and completed his residency at the Medical University of South Carolina.  Following residency, he finished a fellowship in Emergency Medicine.    His professional and research interests include diagnostic ultrasound and procedures in Family Medicine.


 
Katrina Miller, MD
Advisor & Preceptor Director, USC Physician Assistant Program

Dr. Miller currently serves as the Medical Director of the USC Primary Care Physician Assistant Program and is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the USC Family Medicine Residency Program.  She is native to Washington DC, but went across country for undergraduate studies at Reed College in Portland, Oregon.  After 3 years of various work (senate campaigns, music business, orthopedic surgery) she attended Medical School at Eastern Virginia Medical School and went on to complete her Residency at the UCLA-Westwood Family Medicine Residency.  She enjoys teaching, research and keeping busy with the program and has particular interests in dermatology, women's health, psychology and health prevention through allopathic and alternative methods.  She also has a website, www.doctorgroovy.net and an internet radio show where she attempts to educate the public through media, consulting and outreach. She volunteers at the Mission Clinic, LA and in her spare time loves hiking, biking, art, music, dance and theatre.
Michelle Najera
Residency Coordinator
Michelle Najera is the residency coordinator for the USC FM program. She has been with the program for 6 years and with USCfor 20 years. "I have 4 children, 1 grandchild and 30 residents. I truly enjoy working with residents and being a part of their 3 years of
training. My job is to help you through the rough spots and be there if you just need to talk. We have an amazing group of residents and an impressive group of faculty. There is so much to gain from this program I hope you will come and check us out."
Tracey Norton, DO
Program Director

Dr. Norton completed her residency at USC’s California Hospital program, followed by a faculty development fellowship . She has a Certificate of Added Qualification in Adolescent Medicine. Her professional interests also include women’s health and family-centered maternity care.
Heather Paladine, MD
Associate Residency Director Medical Director, USC FMC-San Gabriel Advisor, FMC Introduction & Adult Medicine Coordinator
Dr. Paladine attended Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.  She then completed a residency in Family Medicine at Oregon Health and Science University and went on to do a fellowship in Maternal and Children's Health Care at California Hospital in Los Angeles.  Dr. Paladine was a residency faculty member at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland for five years before moving to Los Angeles in March 2006.  She is currently Visiting Assistant Professor in Clinical Family Medicine at USC, Medical Director of the San Gabriel Valley clinic, and Associate Residency Director. Dr. Paladine's interests include women's health, maternity care, and reproductive health care in Family Medicine.  Outside of medicine, she enjoys marathon walking and is a fan of science fiction.

Brett White , MD
Medical Director – UH-FMC Advisor, Practice Management Coordinator
Dr. White received his MD degree from USC/Keck School of Medicine and completed a residency in Family Medicine at UCLA - Santa Monica.  He is currently Medical Director of the department's Family Medicine Center at University Hospital, and coordinator for the residency's Practice Management curriculum.  Dr. White is also Director of Student Health Services on the Health Science Campus at USC. His clinical and research interests include complimentary and alternative medicine in modern health care, preventive medicine as it relates to personal and societal health and well-being, and student health at an academic medical center.
