| Clinical
Consultation
The Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center
at USC offers a clinical consultation program targeted to
providers and clinics throughout Southern California. PAETC
clinical faculty who are experienced in managing patients
with HIV disease conduct this program. Kathleen Jacobson,
M.D. serves as our primary clinical consultant for providers
serving populations outside the Los Angeles area and for providers
who see a moderate volume of patients with HIV diseases. Lesley
Carmichael, D.O. and Peter Katsufrakis, M.D. also serve as
clinical consultants, primarily in clinics in Los Angeles.
Consultation can also be provided on an International basis.
Our International Education
and Training is available for both in-country training
and training at USC.
Our goal is to assist individual clinicians,
and in some cases entire clinics, develop and increase HIV/AIDS
treatment capability and to improve the quality of care for
HIV infected patients. A PAETC clinician consults with HIV
providers regarding the assessment and management of patients
with HIV disease. Consultation also includes discussions of
issues related to the co-management of patients with HIV specialists,
as well as early detection of HIV disease and prevention interventions
for HIV positive patients.
Typically, the faculty consultant, along
with the provider, completes an education needs assessment.
As part of the needs assessment, a thorough patient chart
review may also be conducted. The consultant and provider
may also see patients at the clinic as part of the clinical
consultation training. Consultation within the clinical setting
may be as brief as a few visits to the clinic site or may
be part of a longitudinal clinical consultation plan, with
consultation visits lasting over several months.
The PAETC clinical consultation program has
taken place in a variety of clinical settings, from inter-city
to remote rural clinics. Special emphasis is given to clinics
that serve targeted populations, especially to those unable
to regularly participate in continuing medical education and
those that have not had previous access to HIV training.
