The primary objective of the Department of Family Medicine is the education of students, residents, fellows, faculty and community physicians in the principles of family medicine. The department seeks to discover new knowledge that will contribute to the processes and outcomes of healthcare. The Department of Family Medicine also aims to improve the health of the population by providing high quality family and community oriented health care to our patients.

Prompted by a 2003 study conducted by Michael Cousineau, director of the division of community health in the Department of Family Medicine, a community coalition recently announced the launch of several comprehensive health care programs to serve the homeless of Skid Row.
