The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department at one of the most expansive academic medical complexes in the United States. DOM continues to lead USC in the provision of clinical care in both the private practice and within the LAC+USC Healthcare Network. The complex is comprised of the LAC + USC Medical Center, the private USC/Norris and USC University hospitals, and the USC Internal Medicine private practice ambulatory venues. The private practice has experienced steady growth since its beginnings in the 1980’s. Among the nineteen clinical departments, DOM stands out as the dominant admitting unit, accounting for 45.7% of all admissions across the three hospitals. Within the LAC+USC Healthcare Network, which alone is one of the nation’s more sizable teaching hospitals, the Department provided approximately 45% of the ambulatory and inpatient activity. In the outpatient arena, the cumulative ambulatory visits approximated 250,000 in 2001-02.
