The Department of Medicine continues to be an essential and active resource for patient care, administration, clinical research, and education at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center (RLANRC). The Department’s physician attending staff served inpatients and outpatients referred from the NeuroRehabilitation Programs and from other Los Angeles County and private hospitals. The inpatient census was well maintained and Medicine patients constituted about 30% of the average total daily census of 150 inpatients. The Department successfully participated in the Clinical Resource Management (CRM) pathway for congestive heart failure. The attendings also did well teaching medical students from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC). The Department remained active in community teaching. Research was well funded, such as in Environmental Health.
