Internal Medicine Residency Program
The University of Southern California Internal Medicine Residency
Training Program is situated at one of the largest health
sciences teaching facilities in the United States. The USC
Health Sciences Campus includes the Schools of Medicine and
Pharmacy and a number of public and private teaching hospitals,
and a variety of research institutes dedicated to excellence
in teaching, scientific investigation and state-of-the-art
clinical care. The Department of Medicine, under the leadership
of its Chairman, Edward Crandall, Ph.D., M.D., is at the forefront
of the School’s activities. Ron Ben-Ari, M.D., Senior
Associate Chair for Educational Affairs and Program Director,
coordinates the Department’s delivery of a comprehensive,
well-rounded curriculum and unrivaled ambulatory and inpatient
clinical experiences to its residents.
Internal medicine residents at USC are well-rounded and talented
individuals with a commitment to education and patient care.
They have the opportunity to develop excellent diagnostic
and management skills while learning hands-on medicine from
a patient base with a truly remarkable range of common and
uncommon clinical problems. Our residents are critical members
of our care teams and are allowed progressive autonomy in
their roles as physicians in training. USC internal medicine
residents are important contributors to the teaching of medical
students and other house staff. At the completion of their
training, USC internal medicine residents are outstanding
physicians well suited for any fellowship or career in internal
medicine.
The Department boasts over 175 full-time physician and Ph.D.
faculty with expertise encompassing general medicine and all
internal medicine subspecialties. Many of USC’s faculty
are renowned scientists and clinicians, twenty four of whom
are listed in the publication “Best Doctors in America”
and three of whom have been named Masters of the American
College of Physicians. The wealth of clinical material at
the Health Sciences Campus enables the Department of Medicine
to provide truly unique training opportunities for our house
officers in both ambulatory and inpatient venues.
FIRM SYSTEM
Each house officer and faculty member is assigned to one of
three “Firms”: Cardinal, Gold, or White. The Firm
system promotes collegiality among house officers and faculty
and fosters efficient and effective patient care and educational
programs. Each Firm has its own faculty directors and chief
resident.
There are three training programs offered by the Department
of Medicine:
• 3-year categorical program in Internal Medicine
• 4-year residency in combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics
• 1-year preliminary program in Internal Medicine
CATEGORICAL PROGRAM
The Department of Medicine offers 54 positions per year to
applicants seeking a three-year training experience preparing
them for board eligibility in Internal Medicine and subsequent
careers in general or subspecialty medicine. The wealth of
clinical material at the Health Sciences Campus and the balanced
and structured curriculum enables the Department of Medicine
to provide truly unique training opportunities for our house
officers.
COMBINED INTERNAL MEDICINE-PEDIATRICS
The Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics offer six positions
per year to applicants seeking a four-year training experience
preparing them for board eligibility in both Internal Medicine
and Pediatrics. Residents in the combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics
program alternate between medicine and pediatric training
experiences every three months. Each individual gains experience
in both ambulatory and inpatient health care delivery and,
throughout the four years, maintains continuity clinics in
both adult and pediatric medicine.
