Hospital-based Training
The multiple hospital affiliations at USC provide Internal Medicine
house officers with a remarkable array of public and private inpatient
experiences. This variety of training environments ensures that
graduates of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at USC have
a unique breadth of clinical exposure and the benefit of treating
diverse patient populations in a spectrum of health care delivery
systems.
LAC+USC MEDICAL CENTER
Founded in 1878, the LAC+USC Medical Center is the primary teaching
facility of the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern
California. This affiliation has existed since 1885 and has been
a cooperative endeavor without interruption since its inception.
The Medical Center ranks as one of the largest acute care facilities
in the United States and provides world-class medical care to the
indigent population of Los Angeles County. There are over 900 physicians
in training enrolled in the nearly 50 accredited training programs
at the Medical Center. The exposure of the Department of Medicine’s
approximately 187 interns and residents and approximately 80 fellows
to trainees in other cognitive and surgical specialties ensures
that internal medicine trainees receive the most comprehensive training
possible. Each day, Internal Medicine house officers are exposed
to a spectrum of clinical pathology unseen elsewhere in the country.
The Medical Center is a full-service hospital and the approximately
50,000 patients admitted each year have access to a full range of
medical and surgical services. At the Medical Center, the Department
of Medicine directly supervises the delivery of care to approximately
350 General Medicine and Subspecialty beds.
Inpatient and the bulk of outpatient services moved into the new
state-of-the-art, one billion dollar, 600-bed hospital and outpatient
center on site at the LAC + USC Medical Center in November 2008.
Patient care and the training experience of all of the residents
within the Medical Center have been greatly enhanced with access
to the ultra-modern facilities.
USC UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
USC University Hospital is a private 411-bed referral hospital dedicated
to tertiary care and research. This modern state-of-the-art facility
provides patients with the latest innovations in comprehensive medical
and surgical care. Internal Medicine residents gain experience in
a multidisciplinary environment with special attention to the geriatric
patient, general medicine patients requiring psychiatric intervention,
patients with end-stage liver disease, and the medical management
of patients in the perioperative period. A new 10-story inaptient
tower was completed in January 2007, providing 11 new operating
rooms and 150 new inpatient rooms.
USC/NORRIS COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER AND HOSPITAL
USC’s Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and Hospital is one
of the premier cancer institutions in the western United States.
It offers the most advanced cancer treatment available in an intimate
setting devoted entirely to cancer treatment and research. In 1973,
the National Cancer Institute recognized it as one of the first
8 comprehensive cancer centers in the country. It offers a multidisciplinary
team approach to patient care, cancer research, prevention and community
outreach. Internal Medicine residents have the opportunity to work
with renowned oncologists and hematologists in the delivery of comprehensive
care to patients with solid or hematological malignancies.
INPATIENT GENERAL MEDICINE
House officers, under the supervision of attending faculty, serve
as primary physicians in the evaluation and treatment of inpatients
with medical problems spanning the breadth of Internal Medicine.
There are twelve general medicine teams at LAC+USC Medical Center
and one general medicine team assigned to USC University Hospital.
Bedside faculty teaching rounds are conducted 7 days per week and
on weekdays are preceded by a half-hour team-directed didactic session.
Each team at General Hospital consists of a faculty attending, junior
and senior residents, interns and third and fourth year medical
students. Interns and residents are on call every fourth night and
interns are limited to a maximum of five admissions in a twenty-four
hour period. House officers not on call are on duty from 7am to
5pm on weekdays and are relieved of duty at 12pm when post call.
All house officers receive, on average, one weekend day off per
week.
INPATIENT SUBSPECIALTY SERVICE
Interns, under the supervision of attending faculty and subspecialty
fellows, perform admission histories and physical examinations and
provide continuity of care and ward coverage when rotating on subspecialty
services. The Department directs the care of three separate inpatient
subspecialty units: Cardiology, MICU, and Hematology. Interns are
on call every fourth night and are limited to a maximum of five
admissions in a twenty-four hour period. Residents, with the guidance
of attending faculty and subspecialty fellows, act as subspecialty
consultants to internal medicine services and other Departments.
