HOUSE OFFICER REPRESENTATION
The Department of Medicine has established a system of house officer representation to ensure our house officers’ needs are being met and to increase house staff participation in the administrative functions of the Department. House officer representatives serve on committees to promote increased research and scholarly activity among the house staff, review and participate in quality improvement activities, and to help in the planning of recreational activities. The Program Director conducts monthly meetings with all of the house staff and evening events are scheduled periodically for informal gatherings with the Chairman, Program Director, Firm Directors and Chief Residents.

FACILITIES
The Health Sciences Campus has a variety of indoor and outdoor dining facilities and the Department of Medicine maintains designated resident lounge areas in the LAC+USC Medicl Center for recreation and socializing. Of course, appropriate on-call sleeping rooms and complementary nighttime snacks are available for those performing in-hospital overnight coverage.

RESIDENT DEVELOPMENT
First year residents participate in small group sessions on searching the medical literature, medical ethics, professionalism, procedural competency, and resource allocation. Team Management and Teaching and Evaluation Workshops are held each year to assist junior residents in their growth as team leaders and teachers and senior residents participate in development sessions regarding teaching at the bedside or in the classroom. Career Planning Workshops provide senior residents with important guidance in transitioning from residency to fellowship or to clinical practice. The workshop includes information on job-seeking skills, enhancing one's application, interview techniques, negotiating employment contracts, choosing malpractice plans, and addressing legal issues. The Medical Center sponsors an annual Licensing Fair to assist residents in their obtaining medical licensure from the Medical Board of California.

SOCIAL EVENTS
Each year, faculty and house staff gather for the annual house staff and faculty picnic. Residents and interns meet frequently for “happy hours” throughout the year and the Department hosts special celebrations welcoming our interns, recognizing the Winter holidays, and honoring our graduating seniors. Every effort is made to create a warm and collegial environment for our house officers.
