Director's Welcome
Dear Applicant:
Welcome to the University of Southern California
(USC) Internal Medicine Residency Training Program. It is
a pleasure to share with you the remarkable nature of our
training environment here at USC and the exciting opportunities
available to our house officers. The principal goals of the
USC Internal Medicine Residency are to train our residents
to be talented and compassionate internists and to ensure
their access to wide-ranging career options. Our graduates
are exceptionally qualified to join general internal medicine
practices or enter subspecialty fellowship programs. Approximately
85% of our graduates remain in the Los Angeles area for their
practice or subsequent training opportunities. We are committed
to enabling each of our residents to fulfill their personal
and professional goals.
The USC Internal Medicine Residency Training
Program is situated on the USC Health Sciences Campus near
metropolitan Los Angeles. The campus is a bustling and stimulating
environment comprised of the USC Keck School of Medicine,
the USC School of Pharmacy and a number of public and private
hospitals. The presence of the newly opened, state-of-the
art, one billion dollar LAC+USC Medical Center, USC University
Hospital and Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center here on campus
enables us to provide our residents with a remarkably rich
and diverse training environment.
USC internal medicine residents, under the supervision
of full-time faculty in the Department of Medicine, provide
ongoing ambulatory and inpatient care to our surrounding populations.
In addition, all of our campus institutions serve as tertiary
and quaternary referral centers for the region, nation and,
indeed, the world.
The scope of clinical pathology seen by USC
internal medicine residents (both common and rare) is truly
unrivaled in the United States and we provide our trainees
with an excellent blend of progressive clinical autonomy and
direct faculty supervision. We
are able to provide our trainees with a unique range of experience
in part because a substantial number of our patients have
had minimal or no medical evaluations prior to entering our
health care system. In fact, internal medicine
residents are often the first physicians to apply their medical
knowledge and clinical skills toward establishing the necessary
diagnostic and treatment plans for their patients. The exceptional
clinical opportunities at USC coupled with our structured
teaching and clinical programs foster the maturation of USC
internal medicine residents into excellent clinicians, team
leaders and educators.
Identifying a residency training program which
best suits one's needs requires careful consideration. The
accompanying information will enable you to gain a detailed
understanding of the elements of the USC Internal Medicine
Residency Training Program. We look forward
to sharing more with you about the remarkable training experiences
in Internal Medicine here at USC.
Sincerely,

Ron Ben-Ari, M.D.
