Dr. Begum Özel joined the faculty as Assistant
Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2005 and has
been a Clinical Instructor in the department of Obstetrics
and Gynecology at USC/Keck School of Medicine since
2002.
Dr. Özel received a B.S. in Mathematics from
the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and an M.D. from
the USC/Keck School of Medicine. She completed residency
in Obstetrics and Gynecology and fellowship in Female
Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at Los Angeles
County + University of Southern California (LAC + USC)
Medical Center. Dr. Özel has received numerous
awards including “Outstanding Teaching in Gynecology”
and “Outstanding Fellow.”
In addition to treating patients at Norris Cancer Center
and USC Downtown Clinics, she spends two days per week
operating with residents and fellows at Women’s
and Children’s Hospital at LAC + USC Medical Center.
She teaches medical students as well as residents and
fellows.
She is also actively involved in research with numerous
publications and presentations. Her current research
activities involve studying the impact of pregnancy,
obesity, and treatment for cervical cancer on the pelvic
floor, the treatment of urge urinary incontinence in
postmenopausal women, surgical management of anterior
vaginal wall prolapse, and biochemical alterations in
the connective tissue of women with pelvic organ prolapse.
