The fundamental objective of the University
of Southern California Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship
is to provide the trainee with the necessary knowledge and
skills that will improve health care for the mother and fetus.
We have designed the program to provide fellows with a broad
clinical experience, opportunities for clinical and basic
science investigation, and preparation for a career in perinatal
medicine. Fellows in training provide clinical care and consultation
for women with high-risk pregnancies in a site which serves
as the referral center for a large portion of the city of
Los Angeles. Opportunities are abundant for the fellow to
become an expert clinician and independent researcher in areas
pertinent to the care of pregnant women and their fetuses.
Areas of special interest include antepartum surveillance,
intensive fetal care and diagnosis, intrapartum assessment
techniques, labor management, medical complications of pregnancy
such as diabetes, thyroid disease, preterm labor, and molecular
or clinical genetics. Individuals completing this three-year
training program are capable of fulfilling the necessary requirements
for sub-specialty certification by the Division of Maternal-Fetal
Medicine of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology,
Inc.
