Every day across the country and throughout our world, men, women, and children face the prospect of diminished or lost vision. Every day, men and women in the field of ophthalmology face the challenge of treating these people with the aim of conserving, improving or restoring that lost vision.
One of the challenges that has arisen in the health care field over the last few years is the emergence of managed care as the new paradigm in medicine. We faced this challenge here in Los Angeles before most of the country even became aware of it. We saw the future direction of medicine and recognized the need to act.
Our faculty and management team continues to be dedicated to fulfilling the mission of our founder, Mrs. Carrie Estelle Doheny "to further the conservation, improvement, and restoration of human eyesight." However, we also recognize the need to manage, plan and function in ways not dreamed of in 1947 when Doheny was founded.
With an emphasis on compassion and efficiency, we have made it a priority to strive for excellence; but it would serve no purpose to achieve academic and scientific excellence if we ignore the very purpose for which we began our journey to serve the vision needs of the community.
Discoveries made by the men and women of Doheny at the
Keck School of Medicine and the Vision Center at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles are used daily to treat the thousands
of patients who visit our clinics each year. Thousands
of others benefit from the discoveries and practices our
physicians share with their colleagues in ophthalmology
and the vision sciences.
We have dedicated ourselves to providing superior facilities
and services to our physicians, scientists, residents,
and staff to enable them to best serve the needs of our
patients. These professionals are provided with whatever
is needed to further their research and patient care objectives
as we teach the next generation of ophthalmologists and
vision scientists.
At Doheny, USC and the Vision Center at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, the challenges of tomorrow are the mission of today.
