Ancillary Services

Ancillary Services at the Doheny Eye Centers include Electrophysiology, Photography and the Ultrasound Laboratories. Electro-oculography, visual evoked response, dark adaptation, electroretinography, fluorescein angiography, ultrasonography and macularelectroretinography are available through these labs.

Electrophysiology Lab

The Electrophysiology Laboratory performs several clinical tests, including the electroretinogram (ERG), electro-oculogram (EOG), visual evoked response (VER), color vision testing (CVT) and dark adaptometry (DA). The lab has established electrophysiologic macular testing capabilities which are not readily available elsewhere. The availability of the macular testing equipment, sweep VER and bright flash VER makes the lab one of the most sophisticated electrodiagnostic centers in the country. This equipment is used to diagnose hereditary retinal disorders like retinitis pigmentosa and other congenital and acquired ocular conditions.

Photography / Media Services

In addition to clinical photography, our Photography service is able to offer real-time fluorescein angiography with the scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO), a technique that is superior to conventional fluorescein angiography. One important cost-effective advantage of this diagnostic technique is that the results of this procedure are instantly available for analysis without waiting for film development. Patients can immediately review their fluoresceins on a television monitor, as both ophthalmologist and patient see in real time a movie of the fluorescein traveling through the blood vessels as the patient sits in the exam room. This system has dramatically improved the ability of the ophthalmologists to diagnose and treat a variety of diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular occlusions and diabetic retinopathy.

The Doheny Eye Institute is the only center in Southern California offering indocyanine green (ICG) angiography. ICG angiography has significantly improved (40% - 50%) the ability to diagnose potentially treatable cases of macular degeneration.

Ultrasound Laboratory

Examinations performed in the ultrasound laboratory include diagnostic imaging of both the globe and the orbit. Ultrasonic testing is used by all clinical services for the diagnosis of complex retinal detachments, intraocular and periocular tumors, the localization of foreign bodies and the diagnosis of abnormalities of the extraocular muscles and optic nerves.
