Cornea/External Disease/Anterior Segment
The Cornea/External Disease/Anterior Segment Service focuses on problems of the ocular surface, including
infections of the conjunctiva and cornea, corneal degenerations and other abnormalities of the ocular surface
and anterior segment. Corneal transplantation, anterior segment reconstruction, cataract and intraocular lens
surgery, refractive corneal surgery and surgery for complicated cataract extraction are performed by this
service. Doheny is one of the few ophthalmic centers in the country involved in the FDA-supervised clinical
trial testing the efficacy of the excimer laser. This dramatic new laser alters corneal shape, thereby
correcting refractive errors and removing corneal scars and other opacities that block vision.
The Cornea/External Disease/Anterior Segment Service offers comprehensive corneal evaluations, medical
diagnostic services and computerized topography, which can often be performed during a single visit.
Surgical services, as listed above, are coordinated closely with the referring physician. Some of the
available diagnostic services include
pachymetry, potential acuity measurement, microbiological studies and assessment of corneal topography
using computerized corneal modeling technology.
Some of the more common patient diagnoses referred to this Doheny service include bullous
keratopathy, corneal ulcer, corneal scarring, corneal astigmatism and cataracts.
