Retina Vitreous Service
Doheny's Retina/Vitreous Service consists of comprehensive consultative, medical and surgical
care. The group specializes in the repair of complex retinal detachments, offering advanced
techniques such as silicone oil, perfluorocarbon liquids and SF6 and C3F8 gases. The group is
particularly well equipped to repair penetrating trauma, drawing from its members' vast surgical
and research experience. Laser treatment of the retina for diabetic retinopathy can be performed
with the argon, krypton, diode, or double frequency YAG laser. Extensive diagnostic services are
available through our ancillary services departments.
Doheny faculty members are leading researchers in retinal transplantation, imaging of ocular
disease and age-related macular degeneration. Dr. Chong's research in the sustained release of
ganciclovir for CMV retinitis represents a breakthrough in AIDS research since it involves
implantation of a device into the eye to allow for the slow release of drugs over an extended
period of time. This benefits those patients who cannot tolerate systemic, intravenous drugs.
Some of our more common patient referral diagnoses for retinal cases include retinal detachment
with defect, (rhegmatogenous) vitreous hemorrhage, (fraction) retinal detachment, giant tear
retinal detachment, choroidal hemorrhage, and macular degeneration.
